چکیده

Agents with incomplete knowledge of their actions can either plan around the incompleteness, learn by querying a domain expert, or learn through trial and error. In deciding what to learn, an agent must consider whether an incomplete action feature is relevant to achieving its goals. In deciding how to learn an action feature, the agent can i) try to execute the action and passively observe the outcome, ii) react by querying a domain expert when it fails to learn by passive observation, or iii) proactively query a domain expert prior to executing the action. The challenge is that by learning about incomplete action features an agent may determine its plan will fail and re-plan, and thus change which action features are relevant to achieving it goals. We desire agents that can ask as few questions as possible in achieving their goals. We present a number of strategies for i) planning with incomplete knowledge of actions to identify relevant incomplete action features (preconditions and effects), ii) reasoning about plan failure explanations to identify which features will be learned passively or proactively, and iii) techniques for diagnosing action failures to reactively learn about actions when passive learning fails. We test the following configurations of our agent: i) learning only passively and asking no questions; ii) asking questions and re-planning until the plan is guaranteed to succeed; iii) planning, acting until the plan fails, diagnosing the failure, and re-planning; and iv) while diagnosing failures, proactively querying about a subset of the future action features that are likely to cause failures. We find that passive learning alone can lead to dead-ends, perfecting a plan prior to execution requires many questions, and balancing passive learning with reactive learning strikes a good balance between avoiding dead-ends and minimizing the number of questions.

L2 Learners' Vocabulary Learning: Differential Effect(s) of Comprehension-Based vs. Production-Based Proactive/Reactive Focus on Form

This study aims to compare the effects of four types of FFI on second language vocabulary learning. To do so, the study adopted a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, including five groups, each receiving a distinct treatment. The participants were 80 fourth-grade male students ranging in age from 17 to 19. Before the treatment phase, the participants took a researcher-made test of vocab...

Neural and behavioral mechanisms of proactive and reactive inhibition.

Response inhibition is an important component of adaptive behavior. Substantial prior research has focused on reactive inhibition, which refers to the cessation of a motor response that is already in progress. More recently, a growing number of studies have begun to examine mechanisms underlying proactive inhibition, whereby preparatory processes result in a response being withheld before it is...

Proactive QoE Provisioning in Heterogeneous Access Networks using Hidden Markov Models and Reinforcement Learning

Quality of Experience (QoE) provisioning in heterogeneous access networks (HANs) can be achieved via handoffs. The current approaches for QoE-aware handoffs either lack the availability of a network path probing method or lack the availability of efficient methods for QoE prediction. Further, the current approaches do not explore the benefits of proactive QoE-aware handoffs such that user’s QoE...

The impact of proactive and reactive focus on form in multimodal settings on EFL learners' comprehension and production of modal auxiliaries

The major objective of this mixed methods research, which considered elements of both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, was to examine the effect of two different types of focus on form instruction, namely proactive and reactive across multimodal vs. traditional input settings on Iranian EFL learners' comprehension and production of modal auxiliaries. The participants of the stu...

Uncertain Resource Availabilities: Proactive and Reactive Procedures for Preemptive Resource Constrained project Scheduling Problem

Project scheduling is the part of project management that deals with determining when intime to start (and finish) which activities and with the allocation of scarce resources to theproject activities. In practice, virtually all project managers are confronted with resourcescarceness. In such cases, the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP)arises. This optimization problem has...
